33 blankets for Mandela Day
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Panorama Primary creates and donates blankets for a good cause.
Panorama Primary School beat their personal record and donated 33 crocheted blankets to ambassadors of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.
On the last day of the second term, 24 June, the Roodepoort ambassador for 67 Blankets, Arlene Snoek, visited Panorama and collected the blankets after a special assembly.
Teachers, Carin de Jager and Cristine Mansfield started the project in 2014. The first year they were only able to donate two blankets but since then have donated more and more each year. Next year they aim to donate 50 blankets.
De Jager explained she had seen a post on Facebook about 67 Blankets and the decided it was a nice idea to implement at the school. The children are asked to donate wool or crocheted squares to the school. Parents and teachers then sew the squares together or crochet the blankets from scratch. One blanket can take up to a month to complete.
“It is such a lovely project as it brings the teachers together as we all get involved,” De Jager said.
Snoek explained, “Getting involved and crocheting the blankets changes the way you think, it changes lives, it can give people a purpose and is therapeutic.” According to Snoek, 67 Blankets does not have enough supply to meet the demand and those who do contribute to the organisation should not stop creating blankets after Nelson Mandela Day.
