[WATCH] ‘You will be detained in custody’

The third appearance of the two men accused of murdering three Krugersdorp residents last month has been postponed to make way for two additional suspects who have been added to the list of accused.

The suspects who entered the full courtroom have been in police custody for over two weeks.

The state asked for the bail application to be postponed to make way for the two new suspects, a 20-year-old male and an 18-year-old female.

“The police’s investigation team continues drawing in more suspects, with a further two having been arrested during the past 24 hours,” said West Rand Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst.

In the court, the state said that the arrests were made after midnight last night.

The presiding magistrate, Delise Smith has again prohibited media from taking photographs of the suspects as the state argued that the investigation is still under way and identity parades are still to be conducted.

It was also announced that new facts had come to light regarding the murders that could affect the bail application of the two men currently in custody.

The defence attorney for accused number one, Advocate Da Silva argued that his client has the right to a speedy trial, stating that the investigation is being done bit by bit.

Advocate Swanepoel for accused number two suggested the investigation should have been done before arrests were made.

Smith told accused one that the state was sure the new information brought forward would have an influence on his case and ultimately affect the outcome.

“You will be detained in custody,” she concluded.

The Acting West Rand Cluster Commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane expressed his satisfaction with the results of the investigative team. “Hard work, long hours and groundbreaking investigation methods have led to this breakthrough. Your efforts and determination paid off,” he said.

The four suspects will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 27 June.

“I am satisfied that the wheels of justice have been set in motion,” Roland Scholefield said after the court was adjourned.
