Providing skills to the unskilled

She initiated and funded the centre to serve as an upliftment project aimed at equipping the residents of the Village with various skills

The Florida Edge Lifestyle Community Centre, formerly known as the Montaye Lifestyle and Garden Centre, does not only serve as a community initiative – it is also a fundraising project for Sparrow’s Village, a hospice for HIV/Aids patients.

The owner of the centre, Zenta Douman said she initiated and funded the centre to serve as an upliftment project aimed at equipping the residents of the Village with various skills.

“We have a small bakery on the premises which supplies about 50 loaves of bread a day, and a portion of the sales goes to Sparrow’s Village. The bakery also serves as a training facility for unskilled moms to learn how to bake,” Zenta said, adding that they have a sewing facility to train the youth and the unemployed moms as well.

“Apart from that, we have a jewellery manufacturing area which is used to train hearing- and mentally-impaired children, while the art and pottery section teaches the children various crafts. A portion of the money raised here is also donated to the Village. We are, however, looking for old furniture, ornaments and accessories such as jewellery bags to assist us with training.”

Zenta said they also do various outreaches such as hosting a Pamper Party for the residents of the Donovan MacDonald Centre. and a sports day for the LevleeSky Academy in Florida.

Anyone who can assist Zenta can call her on 079 524 1656.
