Family speaks out after estate agent’s death

ROODEPOORT – The family of slain Ruimsig Re/Max real estate agent, Hanlé Lategan long for a half an hour conversation with her accused killers.

Ferdie de Witt, brother of Lategan explained in an exclusive interview with the Roodepoort Northsider that the family would find closure in understanding the motive behind the murder. “I constantly think about the last half hour of her life and how scared she must have been,” said De Witt with emotion.

The family members of Lategan, who attended the bail application of the two accused today, said after the short appearance that they were extremely impressed by the high standard of the Police investigation into the death of Lategan.

De Witt, said, “the police are doing a brilliant job. We are also so grateful that State Advocate Jackie Steyn will be prosecuting.” He said the family values the fact that someone of her calibre is appearing for the State. He said the family were very relieved when they heard that two more suspects were apprehended last night (23 June) and will be appearing with Christiaan Kruger and Fabian Luff on 27 June.

“There is much more involved in this case. It is not only about three murders (Hanle, Kevin McAlpine and Anthony Scholefield). It’s about a whole community – as a matter of fact, the whole of South Africa – that has been touched and affected by this case. This isn’t just another statistic.” said De Witt.

“We realise that Hanlé is never going to come back, but we can rest in the knowledge that the state is doing everything in their power in order for justice to prevail.” De Witt said that even though they are heartbroken, they also sympathise with the families of the accused.

In a profound show of forgiveness De Witt pointed out that all human beings make mistakes. “No mother holds a baby in her arms and says: ‘you are going to grow up to be a great killer,’ said De Witt while gesturing as if he was holding a baby in his arms. “Our God is amazing and righteous. I believe that He would’ve been with Hanlé and given her comfort and peace in the hours before her death,” concluded De Witt.
