Update: Today’s court proceedings at a glance

Media scolded for misconduct.

Marthinus Pelser, who has been arrested in connection with the death of his six-month-old baby boy Deon, has chosen not to apply for bail.

This is what happened in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court this morning …

• While still in the holding cells his wife Bianca’s lawyer serves him with divorce papers, which he signs.

• At 9.45am a confident-looking Pelser enters the court wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt. (At his previous appearance he wore the same clothes he was arrested in.)

• Due to a misunderstanding the media prematurely starts taking pictures and are scolded by Magistrate Delise Smith who gives them their final warning.

• The State Prosecutor Maseka Themeki explains to Smit that the hearing needs to be postponed pending the results of the postmortem and the ongoing investigation.

• Pelser’s lawyer informs Smit that he will not be applying for bail.

• The case is postponed until 28 July.

• As Pelser walks down the stairs back to the holding cells he gives the media glaring look.
