Rhino poaching at Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

MULDERSDRIFT – Rhino poaching gets close to home as a baby rhino is the latest victim.

An 18-month-old white rhino is the latest victim of rhino-poaching at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Muldersdrift.

Co-owner of Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, Ed Hern, explained that his night guards heard gun shots at 3am on 22 June. “The guards drove around and saw a couple rhinos roaming around free, so they did not think anything had happened,” added Hern.

The baby rhino was inside the boma when it was shot. “No-one thought to look inside the boma, both of his horns were cut off,” explained Hern.

Hern and the reserve have urged the public to come forward with any information they may have. The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activity they may have notice around the reserve in the last couple days.

“We need the community’s support; we have to increase our security and patrols. We cannot do this on our own and we desperately need help,” said Hern.
