Get twisted this International Day of Yoga

It can boost your immune system

Have you ever wanted to try yoga? Well today is the perfect day to start. Celebrate International Day of Yoga by twisting yourself up in knots.

Founded on 11 December 2014 by the UN, International Day of Yoga happens every year on 21 June. This day was chosen because it is on the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga is a 5000 year old physical, mental and spiritual practice originating in India. It can be defined as a state of complete stillness of mind.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word, Yuj, meaning to join or unite. This is apt as yoga unites the body and mind, aiming to transform the two.

There are many forms of yoga including Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Inana Yoga, Raia Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga and Kriva Yoga. All these forms have their own customs and techniques.

Yoga has many benefits beyond general improved flexibility and stress relief. It can boost your immune system, help you sleep better, build muscle strength, perfect your posture, improve your bone health, drop your blood pressure and blood sugar, help you focus and promote weight loss.

Today yoga is predominantly a popular exercise contributing to the health and fitness of million of people. South Africa saw a rise in yoga teachers in the 1960s. Since then many native and foreign yoga gurus have come to our shores to open their own schools and organisations, promoting the art of yoga.

There is no shortage of yoga studios in Roodepoort that promote not only yoga as a practice but yoga as a philosophy. It can be said that yoga is no longer a trend but a solid part of the country’s culture and lifestyle.
