A lifetime of love remembered

Sally and Corrie Anderson share the secrets of their 64-year-long marriage

Sally and Corrie Anderson recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary surrounded by their close-knit family.

Sixteen-year-old Sally met Corrie through his sisters, who went to school with her. Even though it was love at first sight for Corrie, who used to drive behind the school bus to catch a glimpse of Sally, she did not share his feelings initially. Sally thought Corrie was ugly as he had a huge plaster on his nose, which was from a medium-weight boxing injury.

However, as fate would have it, the pair were soon dating and after three years they decided to tie the knot at the Waterval NG Kerk in Newlands.

Now residents of Wilro Park, the Andersons claim that the highlights of their marriage are the births of their three children and their great-grandchild.

“We must be in love still, otherwise there would be murder, not a divorce,” said Sally. Their daughter, Venessa Tegt said her parents have always shared playful banter and are always able to laugh together after an argument.

Venessa added that her parents are recycled teenagers – her college friends often wanted her parents to party with them, and while she was in high school, her friends would bunk class to have coffee with her mother.

One of the many things the couple is grateful for is that they grew up with their children and were able to play cricket and ‘cops and robbers’ with their grandchildren.

The Anderson’s advice to other married couples is to ‘byt vas’. They believe the downfall of many marriages lies in the fact that the partners give up on each other and the marriage too soon.
