VIDEO: Marthinus Pelser in first court appearance

He was still wearing the clothing he was arrested in

Marthinus Pelser who has been arrested in connection with the death of his baby, entered the court on Friday at about 12 noon.

He was still wearing the clothing he was arrested in, shorts and a red windbreaker, and was barefoot. None of his or his victim’s families or friends attended the court appearance.

Pelser sat with his hands in his pockets staring blankly in front of him as he waited for the proceedings to start.

The magistrate Veena Krishna explained Pelser’s options to him – he could either find his own legal representation, represent himself or the court could appoint representation for him. He opted for state appointed representation.

Crishna explained the seriousness of a bail application and advised him to consult his legal team on the matter once they have been appointed.

The state prosecutor concisely explained to Krisna the events of the fateful night but could not answer her question on whether a weapon was used.

The state opposed bail due to the seriousness of the offence (a schedule five offence).

He will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates Court again on 22 June.
