Soccer stars come from Charterhouse

RADIOKOP – The U9 team dominate the competition this soccer season.

The Charterhouse Primary School U9 soccer team had a great season as they remain unbeaten.

The team attended three tournaments during the season. The season highlights included winning the Weltevreden Sports Day, their own Winter Sports Day and the Malas tournament which took place in Pretoria.

Additionally, the team entered into the U9 section of the West Rand Schools Cup Competition where they were one of three schools to compete in the competition finals.

The finals took place at the Kings School West Rand on 31 May, where Panorama Primary and Weltevreden Park Primary were the two schools standing between the team and cup glory.

“We played our first match against Weltevreden Park Primary and went a goal down early on in the game. They managed to hang on to their goal advantage until the half-time break. After the break, we came out firing and scored an equaliser early on. The goal seemed to spark the team into life and we scored another goal shortly after, which ended up being the winning goal. There were a few nervy moments at the end of the game but we managed to hang on and win the game 2 – 1,” said Charterhouse head of sport, David Alcock.

The second game against Panorama Primary ebbed and flowed and both teams had chances to take the lead. Panorama came out firing and scored a goal within the first two minutes of the game but Charterhouse soon scored an equaliser. Just before half time, Panorama scored again and they tried to hang on to their one-goal lead for the second half.

“We did have more of the possession but couldn’t score until the last minute of the game where we managed to equalise with literally the last kick of the game,” said Alcock.

The draw was enough to see Charterhouse crowned as victors of the West Rand Schools Cup Competition for 2016.
