Muscular Dystrophy workshop to be held

The speakers will focus on optimising the physical functioning and care of children.

The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Gauteng will host a one-day workshop for parents, caregivers and medical practitioners on Saturday 27 August.

The objective of the workshop is to provide valuable experience for as many children as possible who are affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as their families, in a positive and supportive manner. The speakers will focus on optimising the physical functioning and care of children with DMD, with particular reference to managing the cardiomyopathy associated with DMD and the respiratory challenges of muscular dystrophy.

The website of EndDuchenne.org, maintained by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, says Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately one in every 3,500 live male births each year worldwide. Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys, however, it occurs across all races and cultures.

Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs.

The foundation has invited speakers from Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy in America to be guest speakers at the workshop. Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy works to understand the pathology of the disorder, the extent of research investment, and the mechanisms for optimal care. The workshop will take place at 9am until 4pm at Hope School, Pallinghurst Avenue in Westcliff.

The workshop is free of charge. To make a booking, please contact them by phone on 011 472-9824 or by e-mail atmdfgauteng@mdsa.org.za.
