Update: Father says he will not let ‘drunk’ driver case go

Allow to meet with Metro Police's Wayne Minnaar

Jama Allow, the father of Rubeina Allow who was seriously injured in a vehicle accident, said he will not rest until he gets justice.

On 14 May Rubeina was travelling with her aunt when the collision occurred. According to Jama and other witnesses the driver of the other vehicle allegedly was intoxicated but an investigation by Metro Police Deputy Director for Region C, Mike Smit, found that the officers acted correctly by not arresting the other driver because “he did not appear drunk”.

“I am not putting this matter to rest because these people are trying to avoid me and not pay for the vehicle damages. I am doing my own investigation as well and managed to set up a meeting with Wayne Minnaar,” Jama told the Record.

According to Jama the lawyers who are assisting him with the investigation gave him an update, saying “We have spoken to the witnesses. The first witness confirmed that the accident took place at 9.30pm and not at 10.30pm as the Metro Police claim. Their versions are a bit different as to who the driver was. The second witness said when he got to the scene the driver had jumped into the back of the car and was saying he was not the driver.

He later admitted that he was the driver. This guy had a lot of blood around his head. The first witness also said that the driver of the vehicle ran from the scene and was brought back by a bunch of young guys who had also stopped. He said both guys reeked of alcohol and were clearly intoxicated. He also saw the bottles all over the place.

“I am going to be meeting with him at the office next week to assist him with a statement. We will start gathering all the information we need to lodge the claims,” the lawyer concluded.
