Four paramedics held up at knife-point

ROODEPOORT – Four paramedics are held at knife point after approaching an injured motorist.

Four paramedics were held at knife-point on Christiaan de Wet Road at around 11am on 8 June.

ER 24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak said that paramedics from ER24’s Rescue Ambulance noticed a vehicle driving into oncoming traffic on this road. “Moments later the car crashed into the ambulance,” said Vermaak. He added that members of the public stopped on the scene and indicated that the driver collided with several other vehicles as well.

“Two paramedics approached the man to ask if he was injured after the collision. The man got out of his vehicle and pulled out a knife. The two paramedics retreated and the man still came at them with the knife,” said Vermaak.

He explained that fortunately they have had Emergency Medical Support during Hostile Environments (EMSHE) training and were able to defend themselves while they were waiting for the police to arrive. “The man was arrested on scene and taken to a nearby police station,” said Vermaak. He added that a case will be opened at the station.
