Durban Deep Primary gets special visitors

Outreach programme at Durban Deep Primary School

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Community Outreach Unit once again partnered up with Sihlangene Security Company to give back to the community.

With Child Protection Week in full steam, the two organization visited Durban Deep Primary School (1 June).

The security company donated sanitary pads while the outreach unit gave a talk about safety and bullying which plague the school.

The outreach unit’s Ouma Morudi said the annual programme visits schools in the area and teaches children about various issues.

“This time we spoke about bullying in the school especially in regards to young girls. We have found that at times they are teased because they got their periods and their fellow pupils don’t necessarily understand what is going on. That is where bullying occurs,” she said.

Morudi also touched on safety concerns that surround the school which is situated next to abandoned and dilapidated buildings.

“Unfortunately these building are privately owned so there is not much we can do about for now. But they pose a serious security issue as criminals lie in wait for the children after school because they have to walk kilometres to get home,” she said.

The outreach programme will be visiting other schools in Roodepoort as Child Protection Week draws to a close.
