Education and old wives tales tabled

An interesting array of topics came up at the recent meeting of the Florida Toastmasters Club.

The science behind chicken soup, old wives tales, the internet and education were just some of the things discussed in their recent speeches.

The Florida Toastmasters Club delivered on variety at their recent meeting. The rap of the gavel resonated as they prepared to sift fact from fiction.

First behind the lectern was club president, Dawn Hemming who welcomed distinguished guests who visited from other clubs. This includes the Devision S director and director elect, Thabo Malefane and Gaoretelelwe Molebalwa and area S director Lebogang Sebogodi as well as Nikki Quinn, the new clubs coordinator for District 74.

Elize Ellis delivered the first speech for the evening, quoting author JRR Tolkien in saying, “Pay heed to the tales of old wives — it may well be that they alone keep in memory what it was once needful for the wise to know.”

Tim Knights educated his fellow Toastmasters on the organisation and its presence on the internet. He requested the members to furnish him with relevant questions which he answered by demonstrating the use of various websites to source the information at the meeting.

Tino Chadyiwa delivered a novice speech known as the ‘ice breaker’ on his formal credentials, which he acquired between 2001 and 2009 in mining and engineering.

In his turn, Lawrence Makeleni said the prospect of moving office can be daunting, but in his case it opened the doors to improving the workforce and signalled success, determination and dynamism.

Barry Nelson said it is up to each individual to decide whether knowledge is indeed power, during his speech on education. He paid tribute to the simple blackboard and chalk that have carried so many through classrooms both at school and university.

Craig Ellis lead the table topics session and Alex Muller, Gaoretelelwe Molebalwa, Nathan Kistan and Caroline Clifford spoke. At the end of the meeting, the trophy for Best Prepared Speech was awarded to Tino. Nicci was selected the best speech evaluator, while Nathan charmed and won with his impromptu speech.

Tino and Lawrence were also awarded their CC1 and CC6 Toastmasters International certificates by Thabo.

The Florida Toastmasters invite the community to join them every first and third Tuesday of the month where they meet at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre, Florida Park. Any and everyone is welcome.

“Fear fades in this kind of environment,” Hemming said.
