Winter wish list

ROODEPOORT–Charities in the Roodepoort area request your assistance in preparation for winter.

As we prepare for the approaching winter season, charities are in need of items to cope with the cold weather. Various charities request your assistance and generosity.

Barnswallows provides a place of safety for abused and abandoned babies. They also take care of children with special needs who suffer from developmental delays. Barnswallows founder and director, Rene Testa, said that the organisation mostly needs winter items for outreach children, in the West Rand and Pretoria areas.

“We are in need of beanies, scarfs, warm shoes and blankets. We would like people to take an interest in helping disadvantaged and special needs children. The clothes we need are also for families in poor areas that we help. Non perishable foods such as tinned food and noodles will be appreciated,” said Testa.

SPCA Roodepoort is a non profit organisation that is committed to preventing cruelty to all animals, improve their quality of life and to provide education on animal care and their welfare.

SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach said that they currently taking care of 150 dogs and 60 cats at their branch. They would appreciate if people could donate blankets, cat and dog food. She added that these can be bought from any supermarket or pet store and can be dropped off at their premises. For more information, people can visit their Facebook page.

O’Hagan’s Rock Cottage is a pub based in Weltevreden Park that is involved in various charity projects. O’Hagan’s Rock Cottage Women’s Club member Carina Lamprecht said that they support charities such as Mugg and Tree Community Care, Friends of Rescued Animals (FORA) and Epic Foundation.

“We have continuous projects for Mugg and Tree Community Care. We would appreciate if people could donate non-perishable foods and clothing, that we will distribute to various charities. We also assist FORA by offering a our time over the weekends to bath the dogs, take them on walks and collect food for them. People can drop for items at O’Hagan’s Rock Cottage, where they will be collected and donated,” said Lamprecht.

Gateway Society in Ruimsig is a charity organisation that that is dedicated to giving people with mental and physical disabilities, a home. They also provide them with a school that caters to their specific needs.

Gateway Society fundraising manager, Moira Short, said that they have 95 residents, 75 day workers and 40 of the residents are welfare cases. They also have a charity shop where they sell donated items that are not given to the residents.

“We would appreciate donated items that are arts, craft and handmade work that we can resell in our charity store. Items that could be used to entertain our residents such as DVDs, CDs, sports equipment and clothing. Volunteers are also welcome offer their time and assistance,” said Short.

JAM South Africa is a non-profit organisation that focuses on nutrition for the basis of educational and social reform. The organisation reaches more than 84 000 children settlements across seven provinces every day.

JAM South Africa communications officer, Leizl Eykelhof, said that people can assist by donating money each month to feed a child or they can donate their time, which will change a child’s life.

“This winter we would appreciate if people could assist us with blankets, winter clothes, cushions , educational toys and equipment. For more information people can contact us directly,” said Eykeholf.
