Ruimsig’s very own music star

RUIMSIG - Local artist, Marco Goncalves has made it big on radio.

Marco Goncalves (17), a Grade 12 pupil of Maragon Ruimsig High School recently teamed up with Kyle Watson, internationally acclaimed dance music producer, to produce a track that is fast accumulating popularity.

In your eyes, released earlier this month, has already been listed on the Coca-Cola Top40SA and is continuously played on radio stations such as 94.7, Jacaranda and 5FM, among others.

Goncalves has risen to fame rapidly in the last few years and promises to continue to shine. When Goncalves was in Grade 2, he was already wowing crowds at wedding receptions with his musical talent. By the time he was in high school, he knew he wanted to take his talent more seriously and started to take singing lessons.

He contacted Universal Music South Africa and was taken on by Nic Burger, who became his mentor and put out the Facebook post that caught Watson’s eye. Three months later, In your eyes was released.

Goncalves said he is grateful for all the support he receives from his parents, friends and teachers. Some of them have been with him since the beginning of his musical journey. “It can be tough to stay humble as it is a really good feeling when someone stops you to take a picture or pay you a compliment. But I was brought up knowing that we are all the same. My friends know who I am, who I always was,” Goncalves added.

In the next five to 10 years, Goncalves wants to make something of his singing career, work with international artists and travel the world. However, he still wants to have a degree under his belt and aims to study a B Com in marketing while continuing with furthering his singing career.

Even though it can be tough to juggle his studies and a blossoming career, Goncalves said he has done the best he has ever done at school this last term. If school continues to go as well as it is, Goncalves hopes to release a new song under his own name, ‘Marco G’, in August.
