Yesterday’s commotion in Witpoortjie

Police work with tracking company.

Residents’ curiosity were piqued yesterday when a police helicopter circled over Witpoortjie for about an hour while police vehicles and West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) patrollers searched the streets.

This time though it was not a visible policing effort as often is the case. According to WSRNW spokesperson Frik van Zyl a white Toyota Hilux bakkie was stolen at Clearwater Mall at around noon. The tracking company picked up the signal from the bakkie’s tracking device in Witpoortjie and a search ensued. It continued until around 3pm but was abandoned when the tracking device was found in De Vries Street with the vehicle nowhere in sight.

According to information Louis Grobler of Security in Practice (Sip) has passed on to the Record, a recent study shows that the following vehicles are the most popular among motor vehicle thieves:

1. Toyota HiAce

2. Nissan 1400

3. Toyota Hilux

4. Toyota Venture

5. Toyota Corolla

6. Toyota Fortuner
