Hearty meal for #HaveAHeart Project

#HaveAHeart Project near completion, but more funds needed.

Last week, between Rawson Properties, NCL Attorneys and the Anchor Riders motorcycle club they served up a hearty meal to #HaveAHeart Project’s beneficiaries.

The Have A Heart Care Centre for the aged was launched earlier in May and saw to it that elderly residents have a place of refuge in their old day in Roodepoort. With only meager government pensions of R1 500 to make ends meet, #HaveAHeart offers these residents boarding and three meals a day. The Record endorses founder Marius Oelofse’s vision to give a warm, friendly home to less fortunate elderly. Over the course of May, a partnership formed between the centre and the newspaper saw to it that the community is aware of the mission and its appeal for sponsorship and donations. This translated to many items of furniture, crockery and cutlery, bedding and curtaining being donated to the centre by good-willed Roodepoorters, organisations and churches.

In another such escapade for the elderly, the Anchor Riders responded to the Record’s request. They spent the Sunday before last at the centre, donating various items and blankets to the elderly and providing a warm meal and a friendly ear.

Last week, they also partnered with Rawson Properties and NCL Attorneys in sponsoring another hearty meal for the residents. This came in the form of a lunch of delicious soup, a breadroll and various savoury and sweet items for dessert, including muffins and scones.

The grateful gazes on the residents’ faces can’t fully be expressed in words.

They were also spoiled with hampers sponsored between the three donateurs, which included basic necessities such as a warm blanket, soap, deodorant and body lotion.

When prompted for a reason for their involvement, Barbra Coetzee simply said, “We don’t want our names mentioned; this is not about us, it is about them.”

The Record decided to mention the sponsors anyway, as a vote of thanks.

Oelofse extended a heartfelt thanks to all three organisations who have made a massive difference in the immediate futures of the residents in his care.

Nellie Raaths, a resident herself and a qualified nurse who serves the centre, simply said, “I really like a nice meal of soup and bread”.

The #HaveAHeart Project is still not completed and the centre could do with a few more donations and cash injections. To find out how to get involved and what they need help with, contact Marius Oelofse on 084 639 7144 or 082 952 7151 or visit the centre at 47 Van Wyk Street, Roodepoort CBD. The residents would really enjoy a visit. Bank details are available from Oelofse on request.
