Walk a mile in their shoes

Rocci challenges local businessmen to walk the mile.

In an initiative that is the first of its kind in the West Rand, Rocci means to have local businessmen walk a mile in the shoes of the destitute and homeless.

They’re partnering with Tower of Life for the initiative, which will kick off on Friday 27 May. Tower of Life operates in Krugersdorp, a non-profit organisation that enhances sustainable livelihood solutions for the homeless, destitute and abandoned. They provide shelter, bathing facilities and nutritious meals in a safe environment. They offer voucher booklets at R100 each, which residents in turn can give to those they find begging on street corners and at intersections, , instead of a few coins. Each voucher gives a person a clean and safe place of refuge, with a shower and a warm meal for the night.

The Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Rocci) have recognised this need and is joining hands with Tower of Life.

“Take post and come dine with the people at Tower of Life, walk a mile in their shoes,” the chamber urges businessmen.

“Your time and compassion will mean more to them than some coins.”

The event will take place on Friday night, 27 May at the Tower of Life, corner of Church and Rissik Streets, Krugersdorp. Entry is donations of blankets, non-perishables and clothing. Fees are R1 000 per person, which includes dinner and a donation on your behalf.
