Tips to avoid street robberies

HONEYDEW – With the increase of the number of people being robbed on streets, police provide tips to stay safe.

With the recent street robbery nightmare in an alleyway off Beyers Naudé Drive, the spokesperson of Honeydew Police, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs provided tips to residents to try to avoid street robberies.

  • Try not to walk in remote places at any time
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • If people start milling around you, beware, it could be a set-up for a robbery
  • Never overload yourself with parcels, it makes you a target
  • Do not carry large sums of money
  • If you are out at night, stick to well-lit areas. Also try to go out in groups
  • Carry your wallet and cellphone in an inside or front pocket. It should be out of sight.
  • Know the area that you are in. Make sure of the location of restaurants or stores that stay open late as well as public telephones
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

Jacobs added that street robberies are problematic especially on Peter Road and Beyers Naudé Drive, especially in the evenings when people get off the taxis.
