Florida outages explained by City Power

Frequent outages in Florida and surrounding areas, but City Power is committing all resources, it said.

City Power answered residents after the umpteenth power outage in Florida and surrounding areas yesterday (17 May), saying, “We’re committing all our resources.”

Both City Power and the Record have recently been inundated with phone calls and fault logs about outages in various areas, including Discovery, Florida, Quellerina, Bergbron, White Ridge and Delarey. Yesterday the situation peaked when, just 20 minutes after supply was restored to these areas, the supply failed again, and residents had to settle in once more for hours without power.

Residents have made it clear to the Record that they couldn’t care less about the technical aspects of the outages; they’re more concerned about their appliances being damaged during power surges, and when and where they’ll cook for their families. They’re also concerned that it has become a regular occurrence.

City Power spokesperson, Yumna Sheik, and the communications team have scrambled to find answers to these questions.

According to Sheik, yesterday’s outages concerned a central transformer which feeds to the areas involved, that fails continually.

“The transformer had overheated and tripped for the first time in the early afternoon. Our technicians responded and repaired it, but were stumped when a mere 20 minutes later, it failed once more,” she said.

“We have committed all of our resources to finding and fixing this issue, and worked on long past sunset last night to ensure power was restored to Roodepoort’s people.”

Sheik said previous outages over the last couple of weeks were due to cable faults in various suburbs. These have been tended to and should not cause further supply issues. She reminds residents that maintenance for different parts of Roodepoort is scheduled for 25 and 26 May, which will hopefully bring an end to all supply concerns.
