Tall grass poses a major security risk

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo pays a visit to the Klein Jukskei River in Weltevreden Park to assess the tall grass situation.

The RiverWel Resident’s Association has been battling to get the tall grass at the Cockspur Bridge along the Klein Jukskei River in Weltevreden Park cut for months.

On 13 May, Ward 126 Councillor Mike Tonkin along with members of the RiverWel RA met with officials from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo to come to an agreement regarding the tall grass as well as alien plant species that have made their way into the Cockspur Bridge.

According to Councillor Tonkin, the grass is a security risk as criminals can hide in the grass and get away from the police. Further, the grass is also a fire hazard as well as health hazard due to dumping. Neville Burnett from the RiverWel RA said that he has an official letter from City Parks and Zoo saying that the grass will be cut by the end of March – unfortunately that did not happen.

Mulalo Mbedzi from City Parks and Zoo went to the bridge to assess the situation. He promised that the grass will be cut by the end of June. “City Parks and Zoo have done some very good work in other areas of Weltevreden Park, but we are just asking them to further the good work and do the job that we are asking for,” said Tonkin.
