One killed, fourteen injured in Newlands collision

Fourteen people were injured and one person killed in a collision between a taxi and a VW Polo in Newlands, West of Johannesburg, this morning.

Shortly after 8am this morning, paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the corners of Main and Plantation Roads in Newlands where they found a taxi wedged into the side of the Polo.

One person was still trapped in the Polo and had to be freed by the local fire department. He was in a critical condition.

All the other occupants, including the deceased, were found on the side of the road.

It is understood that bystanders removed all the occupants and placed them on the side of the road prior to emergency workers’ arrival.

It is believed that the deceased was removed from the Polo.

Four people were critically injured in the Polo.

They sustained multiple injuries and had to be stabilised on the scene before being rushed off to Chris Hani Baragwanath, Helen Joseph and Milpark Hospitals, respectively.

Ten others, believed to be from the taxi were found with minor to moderate injuries.

They were treated on scene and later transported to nearby hospitals.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known.

Johannesburg Metro Police attended the collision and will conduct an investigation.
