Pikitup celebrates small successes

At least Pikitup was successful in this initiative.

The City of Johannesburg‘s waste management entity has had some small success after the illegal strikes that plagued the city in recent months.

Its recovery operation, which was implemented in April, was concluded successfully. The goal of the operation was to normalise waste removal services and clean up excess waste left behind after the most recent strike.

“We will continue to work hard to ensure the collection of waste is fully back to normal, particularly when it comes to removing waste from households.

“We want no new backlogs to develop as a result of irresponsible illegal dumping, which is a continuous struggle,” Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu in a press statement said.

The entity is grateful for the unwavering support it has received from Roodepoort and will continue its cooperation in keeping the suburb clean. As part of its recovery plan a double shift system was introduced, a measure by which backlogs and illegal dumping sites were cleared. It comprised of a day and night shift and was complemented by resources mobilised from all city entities, as well as third party contractors.

Mashapu still urges residents to play their part by taking recyclable waste to their nearest garden sites or recycling centres.

“Please adopt a zero tolerance approach to illegal dumping and report this to us,” Mashapu pleaded.

Pikitup can be alerted via its hotline, 011 375 5555, or via logging it on the JRA Find & Fix mobile application, downloadable from the Google Play store.
