R50m up for grabs for local innovators

City dangles the golden carrot in front of hungry local entrepreneurs and innovators.

A multimillion rand carrot is being dangled in front of budding entrepreneurs and innovators by the City of Johannesburg through its Jozi My Beginning project.

With R50 million in its innovation fund, the project is looking for innovative ideas that could change lives and neighbourhoods across the city. The project is an offshoot of Jozi@Work, a R3 billion mass empowerment and job creation programme which Johannesburg Executive Mayor, councillor Parks Tau started to deal with challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. It is now in its second year and is setting out to train and fund 60 start-ups to expand their businesses.

Those wishing to benefit from this massive cash injection are required to come up with an idea or product or service in areas such as retail, micro manufacturing, agriculture, recycling, education and skills development.

During the first installment of the programme over 2 300 applications were received, which were whittled down to 161 and later 65. In the end, 17 entrepreneurs were selected for extensive training and development.

CoJ is encouraging residents to “think, think, think,” the municipality said in a recent statement. Entrepreneurs are urged to enter the competition. Ideally, entrants will have entities that have traded for less than three years. Entrepreneurs must register their patents before making their ideas known.

The closing date for applications is 27 May. For more information visit www.jozimybeginning.co.za
