Murdered Brenda remembered on Mother’s Day

LITTLE FALLS – Residents commemorate Brenda Ruvando on Mother’s Day.

The woman who was found murdered last month at the corner of Cascades Road and Hendrik Potgieter Road was remembered on Mother’s Day.

My Neighbour Residents Association (MNRA) and BCI protection services arranged a handprint ceremony in commemoration of Brenda Ruvando.

Residents from Little Falls and Struben’s Valley braced the cold weather on 8 May to print their hands on the cross.

The mother of one was allegedly raped before she was murdered and her body was discovered by security guards.

Corinda Loots from BCI said they put up a cross to create awareness for the residents who walk on that road every day. “This cross will make people aware of the crime and the danger of that street corner. Many women are dropped off by taxis at the corner daily and now that it is winter and it gets darker earlier in the evenings, the community must be aware of the dangers,” she said.

She explained that another woman was allegedly grabbed from behind next to the road about a week ago. “Luckily a neighbour from the local community alerted the Community WhatsApp group about the screaming and BCI Security responded immediately,” she said.

“We would like to invite our community to assist in maintaining the area with us. By standing together we can fight crime,” she concluded.

MNRA director Elaine Sutherland agreed that if it were not for a neighbour who alerted them, they would have been talking a different story.

“We immediately went to where we had heard the screams. A security officer from BCI found the woman badly shaken and terribly scared,” she said.

MNRA met with the Lifestyle Crossing shop owners and centre management on 7 May and appealed to them to donate funds towards cutting the long grass on their pavement on Hendrik Potgieter.

“Would-be attackers easily hide in the grass. MNRA have been cutting the grass in an attempt to make this neighbourhood a safer place for all,” she concluded.
