A new start for Weltevreden Park Library

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Friends of Weltevreden Park Library forms for the betterment of the library.

The newly established Friends of Weltevreden Park Library got together and repainted the signage at the library. The revamp was appreciated by the librarians as they hope this will encourage more people to visit the library and make them more aware of the library.

The revamp also helped establish that the library is now under Region C and not Region 5 as it was previously known to be.

One of the many tasks the group wants to start is fundraising for new books. “There are currently books that are about 20 years old sitting in the library, and those are just too old,” said Adrian Milner, chairperson of the group.

Head librarian Sandy Visser said that Friends of Weltevreden Park Library have helped the library a great deal.

Milner said that the librarians would explain the issues they face at the library and then try to solve them the best they can. “The more friends we acquire, the bigger the projects can be done for the library,” said Milner. She added that they plan to train their group members to use the till and know their way around the library so that if need arises, they can assist. Friends of the library will also look into fixing the fence as it is currently in bad shape.

Another reason the signage needed to be attended to was because some people did not even know where the library was situated. “Some of the residents have lived in the area for some time and still do not know that there is a library here,” said Milner.

“We want people in the community to come and share any ideas they might have for the library’s improvement,” said Milner. She explained that the only other libraries nearby are in Florida and Struben’s Valley. “This library is very special,” expressed Milner.

Visser conveyed how proud she was of Friends of Weltevreden Park Library for all that they have and all they still plan to do.

The group is very new and although they might be small, they plan to grow with the help of the community. “Most of the people who have joined the group are people who love books, but it is not just designated to them, we want people to know that they too could be part of this, its a way to be social while helping your community,” said Milner.
