Sharpen your creative thinking

Florida Toastmasters get out of their comfort zones in public speaking.

Anyone has the capacity to enhance their creative spark, if only they’d exit their comfort zones.

This is the Florida Toastmasters Club’s message to those wanting to become better at delivering speeches and public speaking. At their recent meeting, they applied some techniques they have gained during previous sessions to articulate their ides of innovative thinking.

Dick Hallett delivered a vibrant educational session, focusing on club officers’ roles. He quoted Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Mandla Nxumalo took to the lectern next and questioned what in life is important and why it is significant. He hightlighted the idea that, once you understand how to dissipate fear, fear shrinks and no longer threatens progress.

Barry Nelson was up next and took the opportunity to discuss the human body, revealing some weird, wacky and interesting facts.

Michael Glencross delivered the very important “Go green” message during his speech, referencing soaring vegetable prices following the recent drought. His answer is to dabble in hydroponic gardening.

Tim Knights took the message further by discussing global warming and what alternative, renewable energy sources South Africans should consider to counter the government’s “addiction to coal”. He emphasised that residents should shrink their carbon footprint.

Table topics once more proved an interesting smorgasbord of answers to questions. Paul Muller discussed the good and bad aspects of the internet while Megal Luckay feels students participating in the #FeesMustFall movement whould be heard out. Caroline Clifford discussed why it is better to exit an abusive marriage, while Sidwell Ndaba emphasised the importance of helping others.

Nelson, in the end, was awarded the trophy for Best Prepared Speech while Elize Ellis received the trophy for Best Speech Evaluator. Alex Muller delivered the Best Impromptu Speech.
