Help for the Beyl family

Employer wants to help her staff member get a new vehicle after the family had lost theirs in an accident recently.

The gruesome accident on Ontdekkers Road near Sterlig Kwekery on Friday evening rendered the Beyl family without a vehicle. However, Marinda van den Berg with the backing of the community is willing to help.

Marinda is a Roodepoort businesswoman who wants to relieve the Beyl’s plight by raising money for a vehicle of the same value as the one they had lost. She is also looking into lodging a third-party claim on their behalf and is in discussions with De Broglio Attorneys Inc. In an interview with the Record earlier today, she said Lindie, mother to accident victims Monique, 7, and Ruben, 5, and wife to Egbert, 28, is one of her most loyal employees.

At least five injured on Ontdekkers

Lindie, 27, works at Marinda’s home industry business in Westgate Shopping Centre, to which she travels by train from their home in Randfontein each morning. She started her job as cashier and general retail assistant with Marinda in August last year “and has never missed a day”. She relies on her husband to fetch her from work in the afternoons. On Friday evening 29 April he and the children were on their way to Westgate when an allegedly speeding blue Volkswagen Beetle caused a collision involving five vehicles on Ontdekkers Road, theirs included. Their vehicle is a write-off and was Egbert’s only mode of transport and Lindie’s saving grace.

They were still paying off the vehicle they had bought in a private transaction and still owe R23 000. Egbert has been unemployed for more than a year and was job hunting actively, returning from an interview when the collision claimed their vehicle. Egbert sustained moderate head injuries, Monique broke her leg and Ruben got away with a few bruises and scratches. An unknown Samaritan fetched Lindie from Westgate and took her to the accident scene on Friday to be with her family.

“They’re a young family who are really struggling to keep their heads above water,” Marinda said about the Beyls.

“When I first met Lindie, I told her I was going to give her a chance.”

Without having completed any formal qualifications, including matric, it is difficult for them to find employment.

Both Egbert and Monique were taken to Leratong Hospital, but he has been discharged and is recovering at home. Lindie told the Record his head wound became infected and they sought help at a Randfontein pharmacy over the weekend. He first needs to complete a course of antibiotics before the wound could be closed with stitches. Monique is still in traction in Leratong Hospital. According to a doctor who was in contact with Lindie earlier today, Monique will have a stent inserted during surgery on either Thursday or Friday.

Transport has been sorted out temporarily with Lindie’s parents-in-law having visited from the Free State over the weekend, leaving the couple their vehicle to use. However, the family remains in need of a vehicle of their own. Marinda wishes to replace it with a reliable vehicle of around R25 000 and is appealing to the community for suggestions and contributions.
