Another armed robbery in Witpoortjie

9mm pistol taken.

Despite the valiant efforts of West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW), Witpoortjie remains a hot spot for violent crime.

On Friday at around 10pm, just as WSRNW members were gathering at the Pick n Pay centre to conclude the evening’s mass patrol, they received a call that an armed robbery had taken place in Bataan Street. On arrival the three victims explained that ironically they were patrolling on their own initiative after the street had suffered three break-ins during the week, when the incident took place.

“They just finished their shift and were walking home when a white VW Polo driving with its lights off passed them. The vehicle made a U-turn and stopped next to them. Three armed men jumped out and ordered them to lie down on the pavement. They took their cellphones, wallets and a 9mm firearm before they fled.

The owner of the firearm said, “It happened so fast, I did not even get a chance to draw my firearm”.

WSRNW spokesperson Frik van Zyl expressed his dismay that another firearm was in the hands of criminals.
