A breath of fresh air

RADIOKOP – Pupils get their hands dirty in finding out what makes us breathe.

In their discovery of what makes something living or non-living, the Grade 3 pupils of Charterhouse Preparatory School studied real lungs.

The pupils discussed the seven life processes, which are movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition in class. However, more recently, their focus turned to respiration.

In order to understand the respiratory process and how the lungs work, pupils worked with a pair of pig’s lungs. They examined and studied the lungs and trachea and were able to inflate the lungs by blowing down a piece of hosepipe, which was carefully inserted into the trachea.

“The pupils researched information on lungs and breathing and also completed ‘I see, I think and I wonder’ posters, which led to interesting class discussions. It was great fun and a privilege to have a visit from our principal, Natalie Thwaits, during this exciting exercise,” said teacher, Karen Hayes.
