Sewerage upgrades communicated at gathering

Residents promised constant communication, map of plans.

Contractors and consulting engineers promised residents constant communication in a public meeting held at NG Kerk Roodekrans last night, Monday 25 April.

Convened by Ward 83 councillor Suzanne Clarke, the public meeting was aimed at clarifying sewerage system upgrades which Johannesburg Water has undertaken to commence today, Tuesday 26 April.

This will be the first phase in sewerage upgrades in the area, Ntombizethu Morebale of Lidwala Consulting Engineers explained to the attending residents. Only about 35 residents attended the meeting, in which Ziphelele Lugongolo (also of Lidwala) and Lynton Vermaak of WBHO explained the technical side of the project. WBHO, Thamandla Construction and Maintenance and Lithalethu Trading will be the contractors undertaking the project, with WBHO handling the trench-less connections while the other two companies will focus on installing new pipes and infrastructure, having open trenches to do so.

Vermaak explained that, to connect properties to the main blocks his company will be entering yards, and not houses. The project is to be complete within six months after which Phase 2 will commence, but details as to the next phase are not yet available. He also made a map available that shows which streets the infrastructure upgrade will affect.

Clarke arranged with the contractors to ensure to take photographs before digging trenches and after the work is complete, in order for pavements and driveways to be restored with ease afterwards.

“The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and I have agreed that way leaves will not be signed until the work is done to satisfaction,” she told the crowd.

All parties agreed that contact information will be provided by which residents can get in direct contact with the involved parties rather than following the Joburg Connect route. Clarke agreed to email a map of the project and affected streets to parties attending.

Suzanne Clarke deals with municipal issues in Roodekrans, Wilropark, Breaunanda, Princess Crossing and Helderkruin, which fall under Ward 83.
