Marching for a Drug-Free Davidsonville

Drugs must fall sing Davidsonville marchers

Sick and tired of drug abuse, the community of Davidsonville marched to the Roodepoort Police Station on Saturday (23 April) morning.

Their aim was to give a memorandum and a petition to the station to help the community fight the persisting drug problem in the area.

Gathering in front of Roodepoort Primary School with police and JMPD officials attending to keep the event peaceful.

The march was organized by Local Drug Action Committee Chairman Hugh Douglas who has been working hard to unite the Davidsonville community against the scourge of drug abuse.

During the march, chants of hashtag drugs must fall could be heard loud and clear as the roads led to the police station.

Once they arrived, Douglas was warmly welcomed by Colonel Mouton.

“With this march we have achieved our goals of raising awareness of the troubles we need help with. The march was well received but we still want more people to join us,” said Douglas.

One of the residents who joined the march, Rose Coetzee, said she has sleepless night every weekend due to the drug abuse in the community.

“At Queenie Courts in Olifant Street the drug problem is huge there. The young children there drink, smoke and cause havoc without regard for anyone. They make a noise until the early hours of the morning and I barely catch a wink of sleep. Everytime they are confronted about doing drugs, they swear at me and tell me to get a man. This is not how I want to live, nobody deserves to suffer like this,” she said.

Sean Daniels, a respected community leader was vocal in his support to rid drugs in the area said there was a huge problem of drug abuse because it is a disadvantaged area.

“Because of that, unemployment is high and people need an escape. And to meet this demand, those same unemployed are then forced to sell drugs to make a living. It could be your cousin, your brother or your friend,” he said.
