Train enthusiasts, don’t miss this meet

The Rand Society of Model Engineers to hold a 6-day Autumn Steam Meet, commencing 27 April.

For train enthusiasts the Rand Society of Model Engineers‘ (RSME’s) Autumn Steam Meet is a social event not to be missed.

The six day event is open to enthusiasts, families and children alike.

“Model engineers build and operate miniature steam, diesel and electric locomotives that can pull up to 25 passengers on riding cars behind the locomotive,” Dennis Applebee, RSME chairman, explained to the Record.

“Most of these are replicas of full-sized locomotives, including many South African Railway classes — viewing and riding them is something to be enjoyed by young and old.”

There is lots of space to picnic, plus no entry or parking fees and free toilet facilities make of it an affordable outing for a large group. Train rides will be offered at R10 per person, of which the money will benefit the RSME in maintaining their facilities.

In addition to train rides, an operating museum of oil and hot-air enginges that were made in the 19th and 20th centuries will be open. Two of the engines run generators which can provide electricity when needed.

The venue with its 1.2 km railway track is located in Len Rutter Park on the corner of Golf Club Terrace and Louis Botha Drive in Florida. The entrance is on Golf Club Terrace opposite Walker Avenue, where a big blue steam locomotive is visible from the road. It is easily accessible from the N1 highway by taking the Gordon Road or 14th Avenue off-ramps.

Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. The Autumn Steam Meet will run from 27 April to 2 May, from 9.30am to 4.30pm every day. For more information and GPS coordinates, visit RSME’s website at www.rsme.co.za
