Power out tonight due to upgrades

Upgrading a local substation will mean a power outage of seven hours tonight, Monday 25 April.

Upgrading various Roodepoort substations, in particular the Kloofendal substation, will mean residents will be without electricity for seven hours tonight.

City Power started the upgrades in September last year to add 1 000MVA to the utility’s capacity in the area.

Ward 83 councillor Suzanne Clarke confirmed to the Record that a power outage is scheduled to allow for the upgraded grid to be connected.

The outage is expected to start at 11pm on Monday night 25 April and end on Tuesday morning 26 April at 6am.

Ward 83 includes Roodekrans, Wilro Park, Breaunanda, Princess Crossing and Helderkruin. However, the outage could affect a larger area as substations do not service areas according to ward demarcations. Those areas could include Kloofendal, Constantia Kloof, Panorama, Weltevreden Park, Wilgeheuwel, Strubens Valley, Little Falls, Honeydew, Laser Park, Ruimsig and Poortview.

Changes to be made to the grid include

• Replacing the 33kW busbar at Kloofendal

• Upgrading existing Wilro Park feeders from 33kW to 88kW

• Allocating space for a third 88/11kW power transformer, two 88kW feeder bays and 11kW feeder and standby board
