Lifco discusses community problems

LITTLE FALLS – When the greenbelt area is secured, residents will be able to walk their dogs freely without fear of being attacked by criminals.

Little Falls and Struben’s Valley Residential Community (Lifco) chairperson Reg Mazibuko is adamant that the recently installed CCTV cameras will scare criminals away from their suburbs.

Mazibuko was addressing residents during Lifco’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on 23 April at Eagle View Guest House and Conference Centre.

He emphasised the need to establish a business forum in the Lifco committee and to drive more membership to the organisation.

According to him, the business forum portfolio would assist residents to communicate with the business owners in the suburbs and work together to curb the scourge of crime incidents.

“We are fortunate in our area to have security companies who assist us with monitoring open spaces in our suburbs,” he said.

He further explained that more members and monthly contributions will drive more income and assist with the organisation’s projects.

The project of boom gates at the suburb’s entrances proved to be extremely difficult to implement considering the amount of cash and signatures required from the community. The organisation required at least R150 000 for the application alone.

“We need to establish street marshals to start interacting with residents. The starting point to network with other residents is to know your neighbour,” he said.

Some of Lifco’s initiatives include fencing off the greenbelt area to make it more secure which gives residents an opportunity to walk their dogs in the area without fear of criminals.

The organisation’s deputy chairperson Rob Wilkins indicated that the higher the membership numbers, the more planned projects could be achieved.

The next meeting will be held on 4 May at about 6:30pm at the same venue.
