Angel’s Place needs local angels

Children's place of safety in need of community's support while busy with legal process.

Four new trustees and the safe haven for children, Angel’s Place (AP), have renewed focus.

In a recent press release, one of the new trustees, Gert Jonker asked for the community’s support while AP registers as a Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) with the Gauteng Department of Social Development. This registration would enable them to house up to 12 vulnerable children in a home generously donated to the cause by Tikvah Home of Hope, a non-profit company (NPC).

Among the four new trustees — Gert Jonker, Kathleen Hawthorn, Michelle Germishuizen and Reuben Sibanda — they have 35 years of experience in social work, residential care and managing CYCCs. Their plan is to look after 12 vulnerable children every month of the duration of the 2016/17 financial year.

“Without this generous financial contribution, Angel’s Place would not have been able to continue to care for the children, and would have had to close its doors,” Jonker in a press statement said.

He explained they already started the legal process to get registered, adding, “unfortunately this is a long and drawn-out bureaucratic process”.

“The new trustees will not compromise on legal and governance principles by taking shortcuts, regardless of the fact that there is a critical shortage of beds in CYCCs across the region,” he explained.

While they’re not registered as such no government subsidy will be available to them. AP thus relies on community support to remain open and operational.

“On behalf of the board of trustees and AP’s children, I ask you to remain involved as a friend and sponsor; the South African Revenue Services (Sars) -afforded tax benefits sponsors are entitled to, still apply.”
