Some to pay 80% more for Pikitup services

Proposed tariff increases open for public comment before finalisation.

Households can expect to pay up to 80 per cent more for waste removal services than they did last year, if the proposed tariff increases for 2016/17 are approved without a hitch.

Calculations show that residents who live on properties worth more than R5 million will, with the proposed tariff increases for Pikitup services, pay 83 per cent more for waste removal services in the near future.

When the increases come into effect on 1 July, residents will pay anywhere from 8.2 per cent to 87.3 per cent more for this service. Pikitup has restructured its entire tariff policy this year, with the eye on creating sufficient revenue to fund its operating budget. With that in mind, they expanded existing brackets by three to provide for properties worth more than R1.5 million. With the new tariff policy, the entity moves away from charging residents based on the number of bins to charging a tax or levy based on property value.

These proposed tariffs have not yet been approved and are open for public comment before being finalised.
