‘We live like pigs’

ZANDSPRUIT – Residents are eagerly waiting for the City of Joburg Mayor Parks Tau.

A resident from Zandspruit Informal Settlement, Donovan Mahlaula says he is living like a pig in the area and does not believe that electricity will ever be installed.

He is hoping the march would change their situation.

Thousands of residents have gathered outside the Honeydew Police Station to wait for the mayor of the City of Joburg to address them.

Some of the residents are marching outside, singing struggle songs.

Some say they are fighting for their rights while others indicated that if the mayor does not come, they would go back and illegally reconnect electricity.

One of the marshalls, Donation Ngobeni, said they started to gather earlier in the morning, hoping to ensure that chaos did not erupt.

He explained that the number one priority on the memorandum to be given to the mayor is electricity.

Residents want development, housing and better living conditions.

Police have now closed Beyers Naudé Drive up to Blueberry Street.
