Zandspruit residents want to protest again

ZANDSPRUIT – Residents are expected to hand over a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg's Mayor Parks Tau.

Residents from Zandspruit Informal Settlement and Honeydew Plot 52 are expected to protest again tomorrow.

The residents will be marching from Zandspruit to Honeydew Police Station on 20 April in the morning.

The organisation called “Zandspruit Community Movement” will be handing over a memorandum concerning the electricity to Mayor Parks Tau.

In a document which the residents handed to the police, the residents stipulate that they will start gathering at 9am at the open space in Zandspruit Hyper.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs explained that the police, public order police and metro police will monitor the march from the informal settlement to Honeydew Police Station.

“We will be coordinating so that the traffic can still partially flow on Beyers Naude drive,” she said. The march is expected to commence at 9am and continue until 1pm.

Illegal connections and power outages have been a serious problem in the area.

Residents went on a violent protest last month when authorities intervened in an attempt to address the problem of illegal connections and switched off the whole Honeydew power grid.
