School children injured in accident at notorious Springhaas intersection
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Springhaas intersection sees yet another serious accident.
Yet another serious accident involving school children occurred at the notorious Springhaas intersection.
Traffic came to a halt at around 7.30am on 19 April when the accident occurred on the corner of Springhaas and J G Strijdom roads. According to eyewitnesses, a minibus taxi allegedly skipped the red traffic signal and caused a severe accident.
“I just saw children crying all over the show. It is so sad that yet again residents and motorists are subjected to the dangers of this intersection,” said an eyewitness who asked to remain anonymous.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said, “From what we can tell a minibus transporting pupils with special needs collided with another motor vehicle.”
He added, that the minibus then went through the brick wall of a complex.
“We have transported only two of the pupils to hospital. Due to the circumstances we contacted parents from the scene who decided to collect their children directly and take them to hospital if needed,” added Meiring. Two children sustained minor injuries.
This incident occured less than two weeks after Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) began traffic upgrades to traffic signals. See
Previously numerous accidents have happened at the intersection, such as the tragic loss of a young man on 27 January, who passed away after a motorcycle accident at the very same intersection.
An update will follow with comment from JRA, JMPD and Ward 89 Councillor Ingrid Reinten.
