Nothing beats a mother’s baked treats

JOBURG – Two local organisations have decided to come together to spoil the elderly on Mother's Day.

Kindness like Confetti and Charity Begins with Me will join forces once again in a great bake off that will hopefully see a thousand baked goodies ready for Mother’s Day.

Their goal is to deliver the freshly baked muffins, cupcakes and other treats to four old age homes, namely Eventide in Emmarentia, Caro House in Northcliff, Luipaardsvlei Old Age Home in Krugersdorp and Nazareth House in Yeoville.

“People are often very keen to get involved with community projects to support babies and young children but the elderly are just as deserving. Some do not have relatives who can visit or their relatives stay far away. For them, it’s not about physical donations but more often than not kind gestures are more appreciated. So we have invited ourselves over for coffee and freshly baked cupcakes and muffins on Mother’s Day, 8 May,” said Stephan Ferreira, founder of Charity Begins with Me.

“Last year I baked over 240 cupcakes for children’s’ homes in Joburg for my Mandela Day contribution and so we decided that it would be a nice idea to do something similar for the elderly moms in old age homes for Mother’s Day this year,” added Alyson Samson, founder of Kindness like Confetti.

So far almost 30kg of cupcake and muffin mix, over 10kg of icing sugar and a whole list of other ingredients like milk, oil, margarine, food colouring, sprinkles, chocolate chips and even cupcake liners have been collected.

With what has been collected so far and the contributions they hope to receive before Mother’s Day, the charities believe they will easily bake enough treats, which will be made with love by eight teams of bakers. Leftover ingredients will be donated to the old age homes. Ferreira also plans to personally bake and deliver treats to some of the local animal shelters.

Donations of the following items are wanted:

  • Instant muffin mix
  • Instant cupcake mix
  • Icing sugar
  •  Oil
  • Long life milk
  • Chocolate chips
  • Cupcake liners
  • Sprinkles
  • Nuts, seeds or raisins.

In addition to the baked goods, little gift bags with soap, face cloths, cards and other toiletries will be put together for the elderly. All donations must be given in by 30 April at drop off points in either Weltevreden Park, Randpark Ridge, Auckland Park, Midrand or Linden.
