Hijack Update: ‘The family is coping,’ says spokesperson

Damian still under sedation.

According to Allan Bright, brother-in-law of Marelize Bright who was kidnapped along with her three children on Friday, the family is standing strong.

Marilize and her two children were hospitalised after the hijacking had ended in a collision. Damian was ejected from the vehicle due to the high impact.

“Eugene (Marilize’s husband) is coping, but he is not ready to talk to anyone yet,” Allan said on Tuesday.

According to Allen, who is the Bright family’s spokesperson, Marilize is currently very emotional and prone to tears. She is in a serious but stable condition in the Milpark Hospital ICU. She has a fractured skull and spine, and had a minor stroke. Most of her ribs as well as her pelvis are broken. She is awake and speaks to her husband but is still very traumatised, said Allan.

“Damian is in a very serious condition. He is under sedation and is being monitored for cranial pressure. He also has an injury to his trachea. His chest cavity has been drained of blood twice and he is on a ventilator,” explained Allan.

Abigail’s arm is broken in two places and she has a fractured pelvis, but doctors decided she does not require surgery.

Little Marinique, the one-year-old baby, was discharged on Saturday and returned to crèche yesterday. She has a bump on her head and a blue eye, but otherwise she is fine.
