Hijacking update: A sliver of light at the end of the tunnel

Damian still critical but stable.

According to a WhatsApp group that was started by parents of Laerskool Horison pupils, there is some positive news for the Bright family.

Marilize Bright and two of her children, Damian and Abigail, have been hospitalised after they were kidnapped during a hijacking that ended in a collision. Her baby daughter came off with mild injuries and was discharged from hospital on Saturday.

According to a friend who visited Marilize yesterday she is in critical but stable condition. She was conscious and thanked everyone for their prayers and even managed a smile when her visitor cracked a joke.

“Things are going much better with Marilize,” wrote the member of the WhatsApp group.

Doctors are concerned about a blood clot in her neck. She also sustained nine broken ribs of which one has punctured her lung.

Due to the sensitivity of the matter the Record can only reveal that it “is going much better with the family”.

Meanwhile a debate is raging on social media with regard to two issues that surfaced after the hijacking:

• Should members of the public have been involved in chasing the hijackers? Could this tragedy have been prevented?

• Should the suspects have been given medical attention?
