Sector 3 CPF meeting addresses criminal incidents

STRUBEN’S VALLEY – The CPF chairperson believes that if social issues of vagrants are addressed, it will drastically reduce the problem of crime.

Most of the reported criminal incidents in the Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) occurred in Wilgeheuwel, Ruimsig, and Struben’s Valley.

Some of these incidents mostly happened on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Sector manager, Warrant Officer Martin Kruger explained that the number of crime incidents has decreased compared to the previous month.

He was addressing residents about crime trends in the area during the CPF meeting in the evening of 13 April at the Struben’s Valley Library.

He explained that incidents such as theft out of a motor vehicle, robberies at businesses and residential premises have also decreased.

CPF chairperson Reg Mazibuko told residents that if social problems of vagrants could be addressed, suburbs would be better and more secured. “Some of these guys are working for the residents and some of them are sleeping in the greenbelt area,” he mentioned.

The CPF deputy chairperson, Carolyn Lanzillotti encouraged residents to trim the grass along the greenbelt area by themselves instead of waiting for the authorities. The greenbelt area is one of the areas used by criminals as a hideaway.

It was established that criminals allegedly hide at the greenbelt area before jumping into the residential complexes to commit the evil deeds.

She further indicated that she was told that Christian de Wet Road is a provincial road after numerous enquiries made to City Parks and Zoo about cleaning the greenbelt area along the road.

Lanzillotti also delivered the chairperson’s report following the Honeydew precinct executive CPF meeting. “There is too much pressure on Honeydew Police due to crime in Zandspruit Informal Settlement. Most of the crimes in that area are liquor-related,” she explained.
