The Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Rocci) once again challenged businesses to collect water for drought-stricken areas. The 100 000 litre Water Drive was held on 8 April at the Westview Clinic in Florida.
Rocci encouraged all members of the Roodepoort community to join the drive to get much needed water to Sannieshof in the North West. Animal Care Team – Drought Relief (ACT) highlighted this town to Rocci and said that the 100 000 litres will only relieve each family in the town with two litres of water.
With the support of Bidvest McCarthy Volkswagen Westgate Branch and the team from Makro in Struben’s Valley who helped with transport including the help from the community, sadly Rocci only managed to collect 15 405 litres.
The team from Rocci however, did not let that stop them and joined the road trip with the Bidvest team on 9 April, along with a Makro Struben’s Valley truck carrying the precious water, and arrived in Sannieshof where they were met with the community who eagerly awaited the water.
A Sannieshof resident, Carin Visser took the team to a local old age home, that didn’t have any drinking water left. They were met with 107-year-old Tannie Anna who stated that “God forgot about me.” The water was handed over and all the residents of the old age home were emotional, but so grateful for the water. The Sannieshof Hospital also collected water for their patients.
Visser explained that the town is in dire need. “We have three boreholes, however sabotage and theft of the diesel and lack of funds to keep replacing the machinery, is just devastating,” said Visser.
Rocci would like to thank the companies that contributed.
