Residents clean up Zandspruit protest aftermath

ZANDSPRUIT – Community comes together to clean up the mess after the Zandspruit protests.

The ANC Youth League Brian Bunting branch and residents of Ward 97 took it upon themselves to clean up the street of Zandspruit on 25 March.

The Clean up was the initiative of ANCYL Brian Bunting branch chairperson Relebohile Mofokane. He said that the branch recognised that Beyers Naude Drive remained disorderly and dirty following public blockages of the road by the residents of Zandspruit.

The branch recognised a need to clean the road in line with the spirit of keeping the City of Johannesburg clean and for the safety of the road. The branch wanted to pledge solidarity with the aggrieved residents of Zandspruit to see how they can work together as neighbouring Wards and use different and peaceful approach to address and escalate common challenges to City of Johannesburg other than resorting to violence.

Residents of Ward 97 were involved, including the residents who stay at the plots and other suburbs of the ward. “All were united for a common cause,” said Mofokane. The volunteers and the branch made donations to buy refuse bags, gloves and other cleaning materials. Residents of the neighbouring areas to Zandspruit came to assist.

“This campaign was a roaring success and residents acknowledged the spirit of unity and responsibility to take care of our own communities,” concluded Mofokane.
