Man in critical condition after car accident

ALLENS NEK – Jaws of life used to release critically injured man from wreck.

A man was critically injured after he crashed his Ford Bantam into the back of a stationary waste removal truck.

The accident took place on 31 March on Christiaan de Wet Road in Allens Nek at about 9.30pm. The 24-year-old man was rescued by paramedics from ER24 and City of Joburg Fire Services when he was found trapped in the mangled wreck of his vehicle.

“ER24 rescue paramedics and fire fighters had to use the jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment to free the man from his vehicle,” said ER24 Spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

Once freed from the wreck, paramedics found that he sustained several fractures and possible internal injuries. He was stabilised on scene and rushed off to Helen Joseph Hospital for further care.

“It is understood that the waste removal truck was stationary at the time of the incident in the slow lane on Christiaan De Wet Road near the Rinyani Road intersection,” said Vermaak. The driver of the truck was assessed on scene and fortunately he sustained no injuries.

The exact cause of the incident will still be investigated.
