Man critically injured in collision with truck

Bakkie crashed into stationary waste truck.

A 24-year-old man was left in a critical condition after his Ford Bantam had bakkie crashed into the back of a stationary waste-removal truck on Christiaan de Wet Road last night (31 March).

At approximately 9.30pm paramedics from ER24 and City of Johannesburg Fire Services found the man trapped in the mangled wreck of his vehicle. ER24 rescue paramedics and fire fighters had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to free him.

Once freed, paramedics found he had multiple fractures and possible internal injuries. He was stabilised on scene and rushed off to Helen Joseph Hospital for further care.

It is understood that at the time of the collision the waste-removal truck was stationary in the slow lane of Christiaan de Wet Road near the Rinyani Avenue intersection. The driver of the truck was assessed on scene. He sustained no injuries.

The exact cause of the incident will be investigated.
